Nobody in the federal or provincial NS  liberal parties was losing too much sleep over the thought of Gerald Regan going to jail for rape.

After all, often his victims were the daughters of his best friends within the Liberal party !

Sleeping with your best friends wife is déclassé : raping his daughter : the very depths of Dante’s Hell.

But they saw what the conviction of Colin Thatcher did to his party’s prospects in Saskatchewan.

(Hint : death.)

They desperately didn’t want a Nova Scotia Liberal leader/premier/federal cabinet minister/MP  being seen escorted to a federal pen to serve his time for rape.

The trial had to be seen as sort of fair and yet Regan had to get off.

Peeling off the terrible optics of the three babysitter victims from next door, did just that.

The rest of the trial plodded on but it was all for show : the defence and crown both knew that.

The ever-grateful federal and provincial Grits, their party in NS saved, never forgot when it came time to consider appointments....
