150 countries around the world now have at least 1000 deaths from Covid-19

day by day, Covid-19’s red alert colour spreads to a new country or territory...
I have taken the figure of a 1000 deaths from Covid as the point when the general population of a political unit finally sits up and say “wow this is serious - I might die”.

That political unit could be city like Toronto, a state like Texas or a nation like Guatemala : it matters little : there is just such a psychological jump from say 920 dead to 1000, a tipping point that is only matched when the 10,000 and 100,000 totals are breached.

There is always a big delay in determining accurately what any illness’s death total is - it usually takes many months to many years to reach an experts’ consensus.

Six months into this pandemic for most states has let a more accurate picture emerge.

The biggest one for me is that the geographic sweep of this disease is now as broad as the 1917-1921 Spanish Flu : even the most remote island political units are now reporting cases and deaths.

This means a nation could get a Covid outbreak from a visitor from almost any other country or territory in the world : death from a thousand different pricks, if they let their guard down for a single incoming plane flight.

And letting their guard down is what almost every nation has done at one time or another : so now 150 nations have all had at least 1000 Covid deaths - some like the USA are now up to 150,000 to 200,000 deaths reported and estimated.

Because covid affects a certain type of cell found all over the body, it can kill or permanently damage us in literally dozens of ways.

Combine this with it being a relatively infectious disease that can spread from people showing no visible signs of the disease, possibly by highly mobile aerosols, makes it the most serious medical threat to global humanity since the Black Death of a 1000 years ago.

Because conservatives of all political stripes can’t  or won’t read medical evidence and can’t or won’t read history, they do not agree : but they are wrong.

And sadly for millions of victims, hardly for the first time in medical history either....

  2. I misspoke on this story big time : the total - even today the true figure is more like 50 nations with at least 1000 plus covid deaths. I posted this erroneous 150 nations figure on Facebook and no one there noticed the error there either : this pandemic is so widespread my figure must have seemed credible to everybody... Mea Culpa. But again how many in Canada know that Mexico now says it has more covid deaths than anyone but the US, Brazil and the UK and is likely to pass the UK by the end of this month unless less things ease off ?
