I first picked up hints that the UNB main Fredericton campus between 1987-1991 considered Gabriel Wortman one weird dude from a online comment from a soccer forum out of Sunderland England, posted on the day of the killings.
The poster had been in the same 100 person male dorm (Bridges House aka Animal House/Frat House) as Gabriel Wortman, circa 1987-1991.
He had posted on a Dorm reunion site that he remembered Gabe getting the infamous Chuck Cosby Award one year for being the biggest arsehole among the 15,000 people on Fredericton NB’s UNB campus.
His posting hung on the site for a dozen years and NEVER ONCE did anyone from the dorm in those years say his memories was wrong, that Gabe was a nice guy and would never gotten the horrible Chuck Cosby award.
This student came from a Sunderland family (think : famous UK shipbuilding centre) who emigrated to Saint John to work at the Irving Shipyards in the 1970s.
They stayed but he emigrated back to the UK after finishing at UNB and now lives near in Leeds.
He remembers vaguely Gabe having silver dyed hair and wearing a cock ring or nipple ring but what he found oddest was that Gabe never made any friendships, of even the most superficial nature, among the 100 boys, their friends and girlfriends : say an informal community of about 300 people. No one. None.
Now on a private forum devoted to discussing Gabriel Wortman’s spree killings, a woman I will call ”L”, now living in Charlotte County, recalled first hearing about Gabe from her husband-to-be Rob back around 1989-1990.
She won’t go into details but used words like odd,strange,weird, kinky.
Rob merely lived in the same (100 person) dorm as Gabe, but Rob’s best friend Greg actually roomed with Gabe and he filled “L” and Rob’s ears with the inside dope on this seriously weird and mysterious dude.
(“L”. and Rob also noticed that Gabe never made friends, never tried to, and never ever talked at all about his family. A prickly guy who had to make a major issue about everything : widely disliked and the winner of the annual Chuck Cosby award.
Even possibly the last one ever given out. Because a victim who sounds a lot like Gabe’s personality type made such a fuss among the political correct admin types that the award was banned and a major student riot broke out in protest.)
Back to Greg : he had more pressing concerns : his roommate had lots of fake ids, with false names*, and was always disappearing for days at a time.
Wow ! My American-TV-addled mind immediately springs to a serial killer driving the backroads of the Maritimes, charming/killing his young female victims and then burying them in the woods, before resuming his university studies, his urges sated.
(Maybe I had too many oysters at lunch !)
If this story had happened anywhere but New Brunswick ,the media would have a field day.
But this is New Brunswick where the Irving Family makes all journalists (even those from CBC,CTV,Global,CP) have a lobotomy before taking up their posts.
On the Gabe Wortman NB raised-and-educated spree killer file, you can hear the snores from New Brunswick from miles away....
