What is far more disturbing to me is that the majority of Evangelicals, themselves generally decent people, stay so obediently silent to their Evangelical leadership even as their leaders’ sordid activities emerge.
To cite a better known parallel : the greatest moral failing in WWI was not what the Nazis did in the Fall of 1939 in Poland. (And ever onward till May 1945.)
Rather it was that 95% of the sovereign nations of the world stood around in their first (safe) months of WWII and did nothing in the face of clear press reports detailing the sort of atrocities the Nazi made infamous for the remainder of war.
The vast bulk of the world’s decent people stood around and did nothing : like school kids in a school yard, arms folded, while the football thug beats the crap out of a skinny kid in grade nine : bystanders.
If only the decent people had none the decent thing in October 1939, the rest of WWII needn’t have happened.
Similarly, it is the willingness of decent Evangelicals to overlook the moral failings of people like Jerry Falwell (and his best bud Trump) that would disturb Jesus most : from the Bible, we know he assigned the worst circle in Hell to the hypocrite.....
Evangelicals are regular decent people? Sure.

They're decently average... I'll give you an example of how quick that decency evaporates.
Get an evangelical to have a conversation they'll agree with you that #1 Zeus or Odin (most gods) to ever exist in fact did not exist at all. Theres not a multitude of gods there's one God. From there ask if preaching false religion is harmful " is the preaching of Thor as the only real god harmful" they say yes. If theyre so decent why does their face contort with rage when I say "you've denounced all the gods ever imagined except for one and you've agreed that the false preaching of religion is harmful. You've got your foot halfway out the door on this whole god business"
They dont have a verbal reply they just want to hit something. Yeah evangelicals are decent until you tell them that the claims about the world they make are open to the same criticism as any other claim about reality. The FACT is they aren't decent when it comes to their sacred values, they're reactionay and often times indecent. For sure a man didnt walk on water, raise the dead or perform any miracle at all. Certainly no one has or will produce a shred of evidence for it yet they will become indignant with rage if you talk straight about it. If they were decent they'd #1 not indoctrinate children into belief systems full of falsity.
Not bystanders anymore we're locking up those thoughtcrime holocaust deniers and vaporizing them good. Whose guilt that is a salve for I dont know. It pisses me off that anyone is trying to commit the dual atrocity of preventing speech and PREVENTING MY RIGHT to hear it. It's always a double whammie of totalitarianism to restrict freedom of speech its an equal violation against my right to hear it. Holocaust deniers are wrong? Yeah they are, so articulate why they are wrong, explain why we know what we do, bury them so thoroughly in argument their ideas litter the rocks like birds that crashed into a sheer cliff. Otherwise it goes underground festers in the dark in solidarity with no people like us to attack it. Wake up one day and we have "Nazis" from Germany here. Well maybe if they weren't hiding in th dark afraid to say stupid stuff in Germany someone in Germany would have had a chance convinced them they were wrong. Nope.
